I learned how to shuck Oysters at a Cape Cod Seafood Festival years ago. Among the events was an Oyster Shucking competition, where afterwards, they allowed the audience to shuck (or learn how to shuck) the Oysters that the competitors didn’t get to.
It was soooo aggravating at first because you’re supposed to fit the tip of the Oyster Knife firmly in the nook of the Oyster and with an upward flick of the wrist, lift/loosen the top of the Oyster. Then using the flat blade of the knife, horizontally pry open the rest of the shell.
That was the hardest thing to do for the longest time! Painful too because the rough shell was digging into the palm of my hand – but after a while, I learned to cushion my hand and I finally got the hang of it. Now – I’m a self-proclaimed pro 🙂
So when I felt this hankering for crustaceans come along, I got myself 15 Oysters, a dozen Clams and shucked my little heart out!
