Potato, Potahto

This probably won’t surprise you but I own very little print/patterned clothing.
My friend Darby is the queen of this.

She’s one of those that’ll pullΒ out some weird combination of black and white stripes with like a pink and yellow floral top and when you see it laid out like that, you’re immediately like, “umm………wait where did you say you were going again?”

But then she puts it on, with like a red belt cinched at her waist and it’s like good God woman!
She never misses.

I, on the other hand, have absolutely zero skill when it comes to mixing prints and patterns.
I’m like the skinny 9th grade nerd trying to court the girl who you know is gonna make Prom Queen.

I fucking stink.

This look is pretty much as far as I go when it comes to wearing prints or patterns.
Baby steps you know?

And I mean it when I say baby steps because halfway through the shoot, I was already ready to take it off.
It was just too goddamn muggy.

  1. Yayyy! First commenter!! (Umm, because I was here lurking…) I

I know what you mean about prints… I’m not that good either. It’s all monochrome in my closet. But try ankara, you might like it!

I think you pulled this off well anyway; love ’em currrves.

    xoxo

  2. I’m so with you. Give me solids or give me death. But it’s nice to step out of the comfort zone once in a while. But ONLY once in a while. πŸ˜‰

Also, I need bralettes. You make them look too cute.

  3. While I love stripes, I’m also squeamish about mixing them with patterns. Just as I was clicking over here to complain as much, though, I saw a freaking GAP ad on Facebook in which a model is wearing a striped shirt with a patterned skirt and now I’m kind of determined to make it work for myself.

That bralette is fantastic, and I love the pattern on the jumpsuit! I’m amazed you stayed in it long enough to do a shoot because it’s been so freaking muggy here as well.

    1. You know?
That’s kinda how I feel too like it looks uncomplicated when I see other people pulling the combo thing off.
But whenever I try to, it doesn’t look the same …

Like you, I’m determined though πŸ™‚

  4. Girl, it’s really your own thought process that makes you hesitate and go through the nerdy schoolboy hell.

When it comes to mixing patterns, you know it’s wear it loudly and proudly or don’t wear it at all. Patterns need some kind of personal confidence that you look fierce to pull them off, otherwise you just end up embarrassed fashion roadkill.

But your jumpsuit is all that, tho.

  5. Haha I swear I enjoy reading your posts! Dana you look so FINEE in this jumpsuit! I loved itt! I get what you mean but this print is really nice!
    Have a lovely day beautiful!!
    xoxo

  6. Nothing wrong with baby steps when you look that great! Really love that jumpsuit!
I’m the exact same way with prints, I just don’t know how people mix their prints so effortlessly. Whenever I wear prints I pick out very basic colours like black and white, I figure I can’t screw that up.lol

  7. Awe shucks; thanks for the shout out love bug, much appreciated. As for you in a print, you’re killing it, even with these baby steps. Knockout sexy & classy casual. Love it! Xoxo

      1. Where are the pics from this woman?! Sounds like a HOT ensemble!
I still have no clue what to do nor what to wear for my birthday 😦 inspiration please?

      2. Hahaha, I know I know, I never posted it because I didn’t have time to take the picss beforehand and the big night went so fast and I never got time to take blog-worthy pics during….womp
Maybe I’ll re-wear it and take some pics…but anyway! I can help you plan a birthday look because trust and believe – I know how hard that is, hahaha!!

      3. Big womp! Having said that..means you had a great night! It’s always the best of times when you forget to take pictures πŸ™‚
You better re-wear and blog that outfit, post haste!! I’ll keep a beady eye out.

  8. Yas girl YAASSS!
That bralett is saying a lot!
I hear you on the prints; I prefer solids but rate highly anyone who can execute the print clash look. If I have some print, I tend to play it safe and mix with solids.
Ankara is definitely the way to go..it’s where I usually get my print fix. Come visit and my designer will make you an ankara jumper!

      1. You need to do it! Or see if you can find someone over there to sew you something nice. Time to showcase that cake in some African print! lol

  9. Cute jumpsuit! I love how you paired it with the black bandeau. Print mixing can be tricky, but when you have such a bold piece like this it’s completely not necessary- the jumpsuit speaks for itself! You look beautiful.
