Swordfish Skewers

If you missed it, last week Voila Davis was the first black woman to receive the award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series and she delivered an acceptance speech that lit the Emmys and the internet on fire.

The crowd went absolutely nuts.
Standing ovation.

Everybody got up and started applauding, whistling and shit, and all I wanna say is, I don’t fucking get that moment.

Whenever a minority is on stage and they talk about how racist Hollywood is and it needs to stop, the level –
The level of screaming and applauding and crying, doing all this bullshit.

The amount of people in that crowd, almost tripping over themselves to stand up and applaud..
Its like you’re it.

You guys are the guys that’s running this shit.
You’re who she’s talking about.

And I’m not talking about the actors or anything, they can’t really do shit.

But there’s like showrunners in the crowd, casting directors, there’s heads of studios…its like if you really gave a fuck to the level that you’re acting like you’re giving a fuck right now, the person stage wouldn’t have to be making the speech in the first place.

And don’t worry, I don’t intend to turn this into a ‘The White Man’ speech or get into todays racism.
All I’m saying is that I just don’t get that moment.

I feel like in that moment, rather than applauding wildly, they should be going; Alright, alright you got us.
You’re got a point, we’ve got some changing to do. We’ve got to work better, we gotta work harder on that one, you got us there.
You know?

That would be the most honest moment, the most honest reaction.

Instead of standing there applauding everytime someone gives a speech like this like you’re not part of the problem.

It always comes off so fucking phoney to me.
I just don’t fucking get it.

I’m still waiting for someone, even if its a femminist to be go up there and be like, “Why are you clapping right now? Are you going to change anything?”
For the love of god, someone fucking call them out.

Am I the only one that thinks like this?

Swordfish Skewers

What I Used

1 large Swordfish Fillet. Half an Onion (any kind). 1 Med Red Pepper. 1 Med Green Pepper. Olive Oil. Salt. Pepper. Skewers (wooden or metallic).
1 cup non-fat Greek Yoghurt (or soy yoghurt in my case). 1 tbsp Sesame Oil. 1 tsp Minced Garlic. 1 Lime.

What I Did

Alright let’s get to it.

Preheat your grill or broiler.
Broiler in my case.

Cut the peppers, onion and swordfish into edible chunks.
http://ivegotcake.comChunks, not pieces.
Then layer the swordfish and veggies onto the skewers, alternating each until you’re about 1 inch from the tip of the skewer.
swordfish_skewer_recipe http://ivegotcake.com

Drizzle olive oil over the skewers and season them with salt & pepper.
Then place the skewers on the grill or in the boiler.

Grill/broil until the swordfish on the side closest to the flame turns golden brown.
Then flip and cook the other side until equally golden brown.
Remember, you want the swordfish to get golden brown, we only kinda give a shit about what happens to the veggies.

While the swordfish is cooking, make the yoghurt dip:
In a med bowl, add 1 cup yoghurt, 1 tsp minced garlic, 1 tbsp sesame oil, juice from half the lime & 2 tbsp diced cilantro.
Mix well.

Serve immediately and alongside the skewers.

  1. MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. When will we DO something about it??? When will Hollywood stop talking all the damn time & start doing? Grinds my gears.

Lovinggg these skewers. Love the black background, too. Great pix as per usual.

  2. Love the subtle (or not-so-subtle) hint going straight from the much-needed rant to a recipe involving skewers. Intentional or not, it’s perfect! 🙂

You nailed it! It’s hard to call something so true and obvious a rant cuz your truth telling. Let’s just hope we can stop having all these FIRSTS and instead have 10ths and 90ths.

Regarding the skewers — I’m putting that on my list of things Dana MUST cook when we’re having a cookout!

  4. Dana – I couldn’t have said it better. That’s why I don’t watch that shit anymore, because it’s just a male-dominated, racist, boring, self-congratulatory industry/dinosaur. “Phony” is the understatement of the century.

ANYWAYS – your photography is beautiful. Frankly, these pictures always brighten my day and make me hungry and fat. Thanks. LOL! Care to tell this terrible photographer what lens you are using the capture the “Essence of Chicken Skewers”?

  5. Hollywood and all the people in that Tinseltown are all phonies. Who needs it anyhow ? I don’t go to the movies I stick with Netflix or even Amazon prime is better! Now for the food.., am going right to farmers market and get some swordfish! Just looking at your photos makes my stomach growl . I also like the use of the navy blue plates. this is a change from the white I like it

    1. Than you Mojisola!
I’ll admit I did have to google her because I’m not familiar with her or her books but from what I’ve read she’s a force of nature.

And yes, at the end I quickly grilled the lime for effect 😀
      ❤ you

  6. I feel the same frustration too! Every claps and screams and the next day all the media talks about it and then nothing changes… Nobody talks about how they’re going to make it happen. I wonder whats the point of some of these award shows.
These skewers look delicious. I’ve only tried swordfish once (at a restaurant ) and it was surprisingly good. Would definitely try it again.

    xo, jackie

  7. Love the introduction! Can we please talk about your gift of photographing food?! Like someone get this girl a award! I’m going to have to try this ASAP because of your pictures.

  8. Great points and great food pics… To your points: I believe people are honestly so ignorant and unbothered that they don’t get that they are a part of the problem… They’ve always been privileged, so the advancement of the oppressed is irrelevant.

I do like all the conversations around these issues and the Black Lives Matter campaign, because people’s struggles are more publicized… Now what people do with this blatant information is up to them.

Like, why is she the first black woman to win this role… wtf?!!

  9. Whether it’s Hollywood or real life, cut the crap people. You nailed it or should I say skewered it? These look bloody beautiful and the photos are mad, mad I tell you. ☺️

  10. I thinks it’s most people in general, They need you to spell out to them and say I’m talking to you. I have a friend who does that all the time! she hears you saying something which speaks very much to her character but instead saying omg I do same shit, she just nods her head and just pretend she has no fn clue what you’re talking about and agrees with you. So fn annoying! it’s like taking to a brick wall,

  11. That’s what I liked about Andy Samberg’s very cheeky comment about how since this was the most diverse field of nominees ever that “racism is over (don’t fact check me on that)” because it perfectly skewers (ha!) the circle jerk that defines these award shows. (And I say that as someone who still watches them despite that fact.) From the second I saw the trailer for How to Get Away with Murder I knew Viola Davis would get an Emmy, but it’s appalling that it took Hollywood until 20-freaking-15 to reach this “first” milestone.

While there are showrunners who get it (Shoda Rhimes and Jenji Kohan are obvious ones), they definitely seem to be few and far between but here’s hoping that as they throttle up on power and their shows continue to be a major part of pop culture discussion that their influence is able to spread.

As for the skewers, holy hell these are great photos. I think a 50mm prime lens is my next camera purchase!

    1. First off – get the lens. Actually first off, thank you for the compliment. I love your compliments because I know you really mean them and don’t typically give them if they weren’t due.
      Now back to the lens.
      Get it!
      That shit is everything.

      Secondly – *slow clap*
I have nothing further to add, you summed it up very nicely. I don’t bother watching the shows anymore, I just stick to the highlights; performances, acceptance speeches and of course, their outfits 😀

  12. Ok the food looks absolutely superb but I just watched the speech after I read your post and DAMN did you see Claire Danes though? She did NOT look happy about it haha she looked straight up annoyed. Good for Viola. What show is she on?? Is it good? Do I need to watch it and stop watching Modern Family reruns?

    Danika Maia

    1. Lol!!
She’s on a show called How to Get Away With Murder. I haven’t seen it yet you know me.
I’ve never even watched Parks & Rec or Empire or Walking Dead or …..

ANYWHOOO – I head Violas show is BOMB. Like dope as fuk.
Leave Modern Family reruns for when it’s the next day and you’re still drunk 😛

  13. This is why I always want Kanye in the crowd with a bottle of Hennessy of every award show and news castings…he is the only one who will take the mic…but I need to try this recipe with Chicken….lol

  14. I have been both in awe & drooling over your photos & recipes since I first discovered your blog yesterday. I can’t even remember how I came across it, but I’m glad I did. Love your blog design, writing tone and gorgeous photos!

  15. I love the flavours on those skewers and they look great with the sesame seeds sprinkled on. If only I could get my hands on some swordfish – unfortunately I’ve never seen it for sale around here!

  16. Ooooh you raised a meaty, I mean fishy topic- ok sooo, I think you are right on so many levels however, I do get why there was that reaction, even from the peeps who are the problem. Her dress was so fab and eloquent, tsigh…isnt it sad that in 2015, we still have these b.s ‘firsts’ I mean, its sad…in that respect, the whole affair is unbelievably sad. Poor Shonda she has the weight of being the only one giving black actors/actresses decent TV roles…oh and PS I hate Empire!!!
As for food, erm I hate fish, but if I squint enough those cld be chicken skewers so YaYYYYY!x

    1. Hahahahaha!
Oh no because with the fucking weather being so cold, I’m doing stews and soups and they all have an emphasis on fish or seafood 😦

Just tune out those posts 😀

As for Empire – I haven’t watched it yet but it’s in the queue based on everyone else’s (positive) reaction so I’ll keep you posted on what I think when I (eventually) get to it.

Cooked anything you wanna share lately?
Ever since you mentioned taking cooking classes it’s all I can think about whenever you comment.
That and your TV show 🙂
      ❤ ❤ ❤
