Bourbon Poached Pears
You know what speaking of which, I actually ordered something from those infomercials late at night, you believe that?
Yeah.
Against everything, I ordered the ShamWow.
I’m gonna give you a minute to let that sink in.
Because I mean this guy, he takes this face cloth, he sticks it in an aquarium and all the water goes away and then he wrings it out over the sink, the fish and rocks are coming out, it was incredible.
And you know where he got me?
He was like, you’ll never have to buy paper towels ever again!
And I’m like, “that’s good for the environment, I’m getting one of these!”
So I’m on the phone for like three hours, I finally get to hang up and dude by the end of it, they’re possibly worse than every paper towel you’ve ever used.
Oh I fell for this hook, line and sinker.
I don’t know what happened.
And you know what’s funny?
I continue to use it.
And every time I use it I’m cursing my brains out.
I might as well be wiping up water with a plastic bag, that’s how good it is.
You’re just sorta moving the water around.
I was so excited too…
I was going to put it in the toilet, do a demonstration for all my friends….
And this is such a great scam because like I guess you can return it if you don’t like it for whatever reason, but the genius is that at $19.95, am I really going to go through the process of wrapping it up in a box and put it back through customs, sending it back to Germany?
Of course I’m not going to fucking do that.
I might as well use notebook paper.
Poached Pears and Caramel Sauce
What I Used
6 large Pears. 2 cups Sugar. 5 cups Water. 1 tsp Almond Extract. 1 cup Bourbon Whiskey (optional). Almond Slivers (sub Pistachio Nuts). Blue Agave (sub Caramel Sauce). French Vanilla Icecream.
What I Did
Poached pears – underrated.
Under-rated.
The thing with this recipe is you got to monitor the sugar amount.
Things add up real quick and don’t forget you’re gonna drizzle caramel sauce over it all afterwards, so –
just take it easy, alright?
Think of your heart or whatever.
For the pears;
Place the sugar, water, bourbon and almond extract in a large pot over high heat and bring to a boil.
Stir to dissolve sugar and lower heat to a simmer.
Meanwhile, peal the pears.
Add the pears to the simmering liquid.
Covers with a circle of parchment paper and the lid.
This sort of helps ensure even cooking.
Cook for about 20 mins or until the bottom of the pears can be easily pierced with a knife.
Remove the pot from heat and let the pears cool in the liquid.
Serve by placing the pears on a dessert plate.
Scoop a few spoonfuls of icecream next to the pears.
Sprinkle another tablespoon of almond slivers on top of the pears and ice cream and top by drizzling caramel sauce over the pear and icecream.
Serve immediately.
I also did this because I thought I finally found a dairy icecream that I did not react to.
Yeah no.
Dana,These poached pears look absolutely amazing !What a heavenly experience it must be to dig into this plate! Lovely!!!
Hahaha, it was pretty divine going down haha!
Hahaha!
The shamwow is a sham? Noooooo! I wanted one. I thought it was going to make up for all of those glass wine bottles I never recycle. Bummer.
I can’t eat ice cream either! It hates my guts. Literally. Loving all of your pictures as per usual. I don’t know how you do it, but you do it every. single. time. (kiss emoji)
Shut up!
I know sarcasm when I read it lmao!
Kiss and love your way too babe ❤
Lmaoooo what a scam! The poached pears look delicious by the way 😉
Fucking goddamn piece of shit!
Hopefully you’ve learned your lesson! Lol
*sad nod
In the affirmative or the negative? Lol
oh, def the affirmative
😀
Good! Lol
Lolol nooo not the sham wow! I bought a knock-off brand at a flea market and it was total garbage (but was still from Germany, so that made it special or something?). You got it EXACTLY right when you said you might as well try wiping things up with a plastic bag. Anyway, gorgeous photos and recipe. I love the almond extract, that’s my new favorite ingredient. It really adds something special.
Ughhhhh, Cynthia!!!!!!
PS
Loooove almond extract!
It really sucks when you get scammed !!!! Real bummer, and just so freaking annoying !!!!!!
Anyway your pics are to die for, and your poached pears….DELISH 🙂 ❤
Yeahhh exactly.
It’s more so annoying than anything.
These pears were bomb though 😀
Hope you guys had a nice weekend!
Yes we get suckered into buying from almost all the infomercials. Thanks to kids begging for their lives to have them! And then they complain that it was a rip off. Those pears look amazing! 😄
Exaaaactly!
Thanks so much Veronica ❤ ❤
Scamwow! I think I have to request an entirely separate post exclusively on your use of the shamwow. Remember a few years back those Kinoki foot pads that were advertised everywhere? I used them for a week and blogged about my experience. I think after using them I was able to lift a truck. Okay, maybe not.
Hahahahaha!!!
This is hilarious!!!
I cannot begin to describe how horrific ShamWow is, like I’m just not prepared to put myself through that.
Dude, fucking Kinoki foot pads though???
Yes, Kinoki foot pads. They didn’t do much, but when I wore them to bed and peeled them off my feet in the morning they were all dark and smelled like bacon. Which was totally disturbing because I hadn’t eaten any bacon. Maybe this means i smell like bacon, but I really honestly don’t think I do.
You know how people sweat through their feet?
Maybe when you secrete sweat (you like that word? secrete?) through your feet – it renders a bacon-like smell….maybe?
On the other hand it could just be the KINOKI FOOT PADS!!!
Yummmmm
Yeahhhhh!!
The shammy scam, huh? I wish I liked pears, but at least I learned from you about this very believable infomercial. Thanks for educating others so we won’t make the same mistake.
Damn you ShamWow! Damn you!
Hahaha!!
I was legit sooooo excited too, Debbie.
Like change-the-game type excited.
Obviously if you considering using the toilet water as a demo…lmao!
You know….
Look so good! ScamWow! Ugh I actually thought it might have worked, why go through all the trouble of making a crappy product when you can just make one that works eh. This looks delicious I’m lactose intolerant and coconut ice cream is pretty good! No bloat give it a try 🙂
lifestylefinesse@gmail.com
Yeah!!
That’s it!!
ScamWow!!
Yeah I gotta find me some of that coconut ice cream. This was good as hell going down but JESUS CHRIST!
I died when you said “I might as well be wiping up water with a plastic bag”. I can only imagine how upset you were when you opened up the package and started using the product and it didn’t pick up anything that is the worst feeling! The poached pears look amazing I will definitely have to try this recipe out.
Uggghhhhhh, THE worst product I’ve everrrrrrr bought in my LIFE!
Sorry about your purchase but then you only tried☺
Glad you can send it back though.
Dish looks great.
XOXO
http://www.mojintouch.com
Nooo, I didn’t send it back.
I would have paid more to send it back…ughhh!
Then I am like you. I will rather bin it than send it back. Good girl you. Kisses.
Such gorgeous photos of what looks to be a truly delicious dessert. I may have to give this one a whirl. They still sell the sham wow?!!! My dad and i used to love infomercials in the 90s. We probably own everything except the slapchop (came too late). We have ron popeil’s food dehydrator, the toast imprint that says “i love you” in a heart, cotton candy makers, hand blenders, the flow hair cut thingie, DD7 (basically and early version of the shamwow), juicers…we’re just suckers for infomercials. It’s amazing.
Oh my god Amanda!
Hahahahahah!!!
Yeah you totally just made me feel better right now lol!!
Ha! I bought a ShamWow a few years back and then I never bought another one. But I bought mine from a store, so I can’t even blame that stupid infomercial for sucking me in.
These pears look so good, this would be the perfect summer dessert!
Have a great week!
xo,Jackie
stylemydreams.com
Definitely the perfect summer/warm weather dessert!
And Shamwow…I can’t even….
I mean it has “sham” in its name for crying out loud, jesus, what a dope I am lol!
Ok, now see, I’m having this for breakfast. Idc idc idc.
hahahahahahahah!!!
Do it do it do it!!
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. I want your light!
It’s all daylight, all daylight, haha
Give me some! x
❤ ❤ ❤
These look delicious. One summer my boyfriend came home with an obnoxiously large bushel of peaches, with an equally obnoxious grin on his face because the thought he had this fabulous idea where I was going to bake him a bunch of peach pies and stuff. I ended up making and canning bourbon peaches and they were freaking delicious and I’m pretty sure I used too much bourbon and got some friends drunk who left them sitting in their pantry for 6 months too long. It was too much work though, just doing a small batch for dessert like you did here would be much simpler. I recommend you try it with peaches next time, they pair really well with bourbon. I
PEACHESSSSS!
Yes Jenn, yes!!
Oh my Dana, these look divine.
As for the ShamWow, thanks for the heads up. I’ll return the favour: don’t buy any of those magic mops that claim to clean up everything including crayon. It’s a lie! 😉
Favor much, much appreciated!
I bought some too but I got ours from a home show. Still have them. They don’t dry very well but for some reason I keep them around!
I adore poached pears, I usually do them in red wine because they stain the pears so pretty. Love the bourbon & caramel sauce. Although I do adore ice cream, I can leave it in the winter! How has your winter been? Ours is pretty light even though we’re getting a few inches of snow tonight.
Mmmmmm!!! Red Wine peaches, yesssss Eva!!
Winter has been calm as hell here.
I only had to bring my shovel out once.
NOT.
COMPLAINING.
It happens…sometimes we end up with crap! I suggest you trash it!!
But your delicious poached pears are gorgeous! xoxox
Yeah I trashed that shit tonight.
It’s like I just kept hoping it would one day work, you know?
I’m such a dope.
Nope – hopeful! 😀
Full disclosure: Michael totally bought a set of Miracle Blade knives years ago when we were in college…and we still use them. They aren’t as amazing as our Henkel knives, but given what he spent it was a decent deal in retrospect. I’m so bummed to hear that the Sham-Wow did not live up to expectations.
Speaking of bummers, boo to a potential good brand of ice cream not agreeing with you! I would urge you to get some Fage full-fat Total but I don’t think you’re a big fan–the stuff is SO RICH, though, that it could pass for ice cream if cold and it would go really well with these gorgeous pears.
The lactose alone….
Like I would die girl, I would just die if I tried that Fage.
ALLEGEDLY the bacteria in the yogurt reduces the lactose–M is also lactose-intolerant and eats the 2% every day. So it may not kill you after all!
*HARRRRD wince*
Yes but can I take the chance….
Beautiful as always work of art
Awww Natashaaaaa!
Thank you so much!
❤ ❤
These are some sexy food pics.
Shiiiiiiiiiiit…
Oh my golly gosh these look amazing! xx
Thanks babe!!
xoxo
Love poached pears, love icecream and caramel sauce – wonderful – sorry you reacted to the icecream – that is just too too bad. The ShamWow – like I know you said it was crap, but I still sort of want one – I like the idea – always wanted a way to get fish and stones out of an aquarium 🙂
Hahahahahah!!
Don’t you DARE order that awful product, woman!
What a sham, or shame or well, whatever. Love a fruit based dessert. Was the bloating worth it ?
Shame.
Like the nun ringing the ‘shame’ bell on the last episode of Game of Thrones.
(please tell me you watch that, Lisa!)
It was so worth it 😀
This dessert looks so elegant and delicious! 🙂
Thank you so much!
❤
That is a damn good idea 🙌
Mmm hmmmm!!
The pears look amazing. So you’re trying dairy again….your last pizza experience was a close call….lol…I thought after that you would never venture to the dark side of dairy again.
#ShamWowgotmetoo
No, I am most definitely NOT venturing into dairy again. I just got weak in the knees when I started photographing this dessert.
Can you blame me though!!!!???
#ShamWowsisters
Lol….I definitely can’t blame you!
Most definitely affirmative
Ooo!! Absolutely love them 🙂
Thank you so much!!
Simple recipe! I’m trying these.
I’m glad I didn’t eventually by the sham wow. I was going to but it takes me forever to do things at times and purchasing this is one of them. I’m sorry you had to experience that. Have a great weekend Dana!
Hahaha!
Just say no to infomercials. All of them.
Trust me.
❤ ❤
Omg I’m so happy I found your blog, it’s literally to die for ! Looking forward to read more xx
Aww!!
❤ ❤
This looks so good! I’m definitely going to have to try it. As for the shamwow, definitely not going to try. Thanks for the heads up!
I so hope you try this!
It’s really perfect 😀
Nommy! I saw a chef the other day use coffee to poach his pears in. I’m SO going to try that shit out. You know, because I need my coffee.
Oh yeah, most definitely!
😀
How could anyone be this funny ?! 😉
You seriously have me re-reading my shit like going, for real!?!
Haha! Thank you!
😊😊
