Welp, I left my phone at home today.

My gym bag and purse were on my right shoulder, had a hot bowl of oatmeal in my left hand and my house keys in my other hand and thennn I immediately proceeded to walk out of my apartment without my phone.

ARRRGHHHHHH!!

I remember this one time, I left my phone in an uber.

It was right as it was driving away that I realized I didn’t have my phone with me and of course without my phone, I have no way of calling the guy and it’s just like, mannn you’ve GOT to be shitting me.

So I’m running down the street trying to get this Uber guys attention, praying and waving my hands, trying to get this guy to look through his rear view mirror and see me but he never looks up.
Not once.

So I get up the next day and I go over to the AT&T store.

I tell them I lost my phone and could they track it for me on their computer phone tracking thingy and they’re like “what’s your account?” and I’m like “I don’t know… you got my phone number, here’s my ID, this is my face to match the ID -” and they go “that’s not good enough, we need your full account” and I’m like, “well I’m not in front of my home computer and I don’t have my phone so I don’t know what else you want me to do!”

But he keeps telling me he can’t help me without my account number and I said, “ok, so you’re telling me that if the FBI came in here and asked you to track my phone, that’s what you’d say to them? You’re telling me I can never get a phone again?? Dude, this feels like a Tom Cruise movie, did someone just shut off my microchip, CAN YOU PLEEEEASE TRACK MY PHONE??!!”

I have shit to do.

The guys says no, I haven’t been meditating, my temper starts going up and up and up and up … but I manage to hold my goddamn composure.

He finally tells me I have to go to their main store and that’s on such-and-such street and over and over I just kept repeating, you got to be fucking kidding me you got to be fucking kidding me you got to be fucking kidding me –

So I walk out, onto the streets of the fine city of Boston and I said outloud, I fucking hate technology! But I said it really quietly and only shouted on the ‘fuck’ part of fucking so it came out like, “i FUCKing hate technology!!”

And this lady fucking whipped her head around and just then it occurred to me, oh my god… I’m that guy walking in the streets making people nervous right now, I’m literally that guy.

So I’m walking around trying to find out where this place is and I can’t remember if he said it was on Berkeley st or Berkeley ave, I’m looking for this store and I swear it took me back to like the 90s when you didn’t have GPS and you just sort of stumbled around, head on a fucking swivel.

I finally find this place, I walk in there and I get an absolute ANGEL.

Old school customer service. Where they listen to you and actually try to help you out.
I could tell her parents raised her right.

She totally hooks me up, was able to track the phone, get it to make this sound and I guess the uber driver heard it, picked it up, we talked, I got him to bring it back to me the next night, I gave him  a nice tip for doing that….and that was it.

Afterwards, I thought about getting a second phone as a backup for when shit like this happens again and I leave my phone on the checkout counter in the supermarket or some something, but I can’t go back into another store again.

I’m not rolling the dice that I’m going to get nice customer service again, I don’t need to take that chance – I know I’m not.

But I do apologize to the lady that heard me scream FUCKing at the top of my lungs. I know that must have left an impression on her for the rest of her day.

Blehhhhhhhhhhhhh –

I don’t know why I just went into that story, my phone is at home and I know exactly where I left it so here’s some food I made last weekend.

If you’re trying to eat better so you can get down to your fighting weight or maybe you’re like me where you watched that Netflix documentary ‘What The Health’ and now you think you can go meatless – however you wanna do it, this is a recipe you want to have in your arsenal.

1/2 small lemon

3 cups fresh Kale Leaves, torn
1 cup water
1/4 cup Microgreens

Preheat the oven to 425F.

Slice the squash in 1/2 inch medallions and scoop out the seeds.

Line a baking tray with foil and place the squash pieces on the foil-lined tray.
Lightly coat the squash pieces with olive oil and a generous sprinkling of salt & pepper.

Place in oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.
When the underside of the squash pieces is considerably browned, remove from oven, and set aside.

Meanwhile, While the squash is cooking, put the quinoa and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan and cook according to its instructions.

When the quinoa is done, add 1 tsp olive oil and squeeze in the juice from the lemon half.
Stir to combine and set aside.

As the qunioa cooks, heat 1 cup of water in a large pan and steam the kale in it by covering the pan with a lid and letting it cook down for about 5 mins.

http://ivegotcake.comhttp://ivegotcake.comWhen the kale is wilted and softened, toss in a pinch of salt and pepper and mix.

Add the quinoa to the kale and give things another good stir to incorporate it all together, adjusting the seasoning a bit if needed.
Note: you’re aiming for a light, delicate taste so don’t  go easy with the seasoning adjustments.

To serve – spoon the salad in a plate of bowl and later the squash and microgreens on top.

Now here’s where I fucked up –

I mean it might just be me but I felt this dish would have been just a bit better if I had a little sauce in it to hold things together.

Nothing heavy, just a little something something you know?

  1. Ah this is awesome girl. I am so making this. I haven’t seen delicata squash here but maybe can sub it with another squash.
I really missed your energy and fun stories…I had to laugh when you were ranting and swearing on the street 🙂 Yeah, the phone story can be quite a thing. A friend of mine also left his phone in an Uber early hours of the morning, but he was lucky enough just to phone Uber and tell them he had just been dropped off, and the location blah blah blah, they contacted the driver and he got in contact with my friend and the driver returned the phone later that morning. Have a good one ❤

  2. Omggggg girl I would freak the fff out. I’m glad he was kind enough to bring it back to you. This looks yummy, my birthday was yesterday aka I’ve been celebrating for weeks now and have to get healthy again. I look with child.

    1. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
      HAPPY BIRTHDAYYYYY Jodi YASSSSSSSSSS hunttyyyyy!!!!
Girl you better have treated yourself to all the yummyness out there because that’s what birthdays are for!
So I hoped you spoiled yourself and your closet heehee!!

  3. So you know I got questions!!! WTH… if it hadn’t been for the shotty “numbers” it would’ve pulled me in. But I’ve only decided to be wild caught / not farm raise pescatarian. #mineaswell Be vegetarian lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I miss lamb and bacon 🥓 currently. But onto the questions… what kind of sauce would you recommend? I made a Mediterranean quinoa last night and it’s “dry” (but hella tasty) thought it was just me but you said sauce and that just made me wonder 🤔 what would be a nice light healthy quinoa sauce. You’re the guru so who better to inquire… this squash… how it taste? Only salt & pepper aye? Is it firm or mushy in the mouth? Legit questions cuz food texture is a thing for me. I’m trying this meal… I’ve not seen that squash here yet so I’ll try a farmers market but if you have squash alternatives please let me know. And boo on that sales rep with trash customer service but I’m glad you got your phone ❤️ Can you tell I missed ya yet?! Ahahahaha

    1. Daaaaamn Gina!!
You got questions and then some boo lol!!
So for sauce, I think like a spicy peanut sauce would go well with something like this.
Just quickly whisking together some peanut butter (or almond butter), apple cider vinegar, a couple tablespoons of water and a little bit of Sriracha for the spicy part.
Something like that and then just sort of drizzling it on top of everything would go really nice together.

    2. Oh wait – sorry, forgot to answer the other parts.

      Re: Texture:
This taste very much like sweet potato to me. Imagine the texture of sweet potato fries where it’s soft but not like mushy soft.
It also has the gentle sweetness of sweet potatoes so if you think about the last time you had sweet potato fries, delicate squash cooked like this is very much like that.

That’s also probably why you don’t much more than salt and pepper. Like you can put a bunch of shit on your sweet potato fries but you don’t really need to.
The natural sweetness of the squash goes well with simple salt and pepper.

And finally, if you’re thinking squash alternatives, again with the Sweet Potato.

Just cut that up into 1 inch chunks and roast them in the oven (with salt and pepper of course :)) until they’re soft but not mushy.

Thank you for grilling me like this 😀 It feels like a homecoming 😀

  4. I had a similar experience at the beginning of the year–on New Year’s Day my phone up and died that morning, and so the next day I went to the Verizon store near me and the first person I spoke to was no help at all, and said that basically the only solution was for me to take M’s trade-in now as mine wouldn’t be eligible until August. Fortunately the other person who had been tied up with other people came ’round and said no, you can send it back to LG and they can try to fix it for you which is what I did, and thankfully they were able to get it done. I actually have an old Motorola Razr phone that I used as a backup, and while it was slow, it did the job OK for a month. (Then again, I had the SIM card so I could just transfer it from one phone to the other which would not be helpful in your case.)

I’m glad you got your phone back though–I feel so lost without mine so I understand how frustrated you were. And at least you know where you phone is today–annoying, but not worrying.

    1. Dude it’s like they will go out of their way to make your miserable.
And you have to keep reminding yourself to stay calm and not kick every goddamn wall in.

I did eventually go back and bought a cheap(er) HTC that I use as my backup phone. Because I’ll be damned if i’m at the mercy of AT&T ever again.

  5. I feel so naked without my phone. I’ve only forgotten it at home about 3 times, the last time it was because I had messed up the date for a job, I thought it was the next day and it was that day, so I screamed out of the house, leaving my phone on the front table. It was brutal. I’ve never lost it before…must feel horrible.
This is a lovely dish to put you in a better mood, and it’s so darn healthy.

  6. This totally made my morning – thank you. I am so glad I am not the only person who sometimes is that guy making people nervous in the street. Sometimes I forget I have my old crappy farm clothes on, splattered bits of chicken carcass or blood on my glasses, hair sticking up from too many days swimming in the sea (and no time to shower … no really the sea keeps me clean) and a crazy, roaring sheepdog puppy the size of a goat on a string as I walk down the main street of our local small town and I wonder why people are looking at me funny – oh yeah I am also probably talking to myself, muttering about whatever article I am currently writing – yeah so normal.

Salad looks super lovely as well – I need to eat more quinoa – also need to start growing micro-greens – they are so so cute. I also think the more vegetarian food we eat the better – meat comes with a high cost.

I never used a phone until I discovered instagram nearly three years ago. Now I only use it for instagram (and do feel a bit lost without it) woe betide anyone who actually thinks they can use my phone to actually like call me or something……

    1. *gasps*
Claire, why I…..I …..I………… I’m not sure what to say except your crazy has got my crazy beat, hands down! Hahaha!!!

And I am already SOOOO over Instagram, only been back for like 3 weeks and I’m ready to go back on a digital detox.
I can’t even remember the IG posting etiquette, for the life of me I don’t want to do it anymore 😦

      1. Yeah, but I have to practice my crazy on a daily basis to keep up to standard you know – it doesn’t just come naturally – no really it doesn’t …….

Oh, is there an IG posting etiquette? I like it for the advice, support and inspiration of other small farmers and homesteaders on various animal and vegetable growing topics – oh let’s face it I use it as a distraction from writing – it just about beats re-organising your sock drawer!

  7. I feel you lovely, loosing a phone can be such a pain. I once lost mine on the train and spent 4 hours travelling back and forth on the line. It only occurred to me afterwards that I could have literally dialled my number on a public phone hahaha. This recipe looks gorgeous! Love cooking with pumpkin/squash especially roasting it down until it’s golden and caramelised. Delicious. Hope you’re well!!

    1. Hi Brendon!!
Thanks for much for leaving a comment babe!
Phones and their inifinite capabilities have gotten out of hand. Take me back to 93!!
      J/k

      ….not j/k
because I would be 7 and that was a good age for me 🙂

  8. HOLD UP. You come back when I’m on a bloggin’ break. That is someeeeee timing we’ve got here. Anyways, TGIF YOU’RE BACK. Hope you’re rejuvenated. You’re obvio still cranking out some amazing eats. I’m coming over for this, k? Also, losing my phone is my worst nightmare. Also, my keys. Oh, and my ID. Really, just anything.

    1. Hunttttyyyyyyyy!!
We have got to get our timing right, hahah!!
But that’s ok babygirl, everyone needs a break at some time, especially from all this digital back and forth.

So enjoy your time off beautiful, I’ll keep following that IG tho, holla!

  9. OMG, I would have totally freaked out if that happened to me. Sadly, our phones really are our lives. Mini computers. I can barely remember my friend’s phone numbers let alone an account number. And that dude at the store would have made me crazy. People sometimes. I seriously hate customer service reps that are just being difficult because they can. I’m glad you got your phone back.
This salad looks so delicious. When I was a kid I hated squash with a passion but now I can’t get enough of it. Funny how our taste buds change. Hope the rest of your week gets better 🙂

    xo, Jackie

    1. You’re so right!
I must say that I wasn’t as bent out of shape as I thought I would be.
I mean, I was working for almost 5 hours before I even looked for it – crazy right?

I think the digital detox i took over the summer really helped me rely less on it so I’m lucky for that little break, heehee!

Hope you’re having a good week munchkin ❤

  10. Glad you were able to get your phone back! We’ve had a few mishaps in our family in regards to phone – and sometimes weren’t so lucky!! And the meal is simple yet sounds delish! XOXO

Go on, get it out..
